Today, I turn 37 years old. I still remember when I thought 30 was over-the-hill, and used to tease my mum that ’35 was closer to 40!’ (little shit..) So today I decided I was going to make a list of things I wish I knew about getting older when I was 25.
- You are an idiot
You don’t know much of anything at all. I know you feel like you know everything, but you really don’t. Trust me. The older you get the more you will realise just how much you don’t know.
2. You will get older and the years go faster
For some reason it never feels like you will get older, but it will happen before you know it! Going from 25 to 35 honestly feels like a year, not ten. Years go so fast that it literally scares you.
3. People will start dying around you
TV personalities, singers and family that you thought were immortal will start to die around you. I never thought about being without my grandparents, but both have passed within two years along with my uncle and a couple of friends. It is a shock every time and I still struggle, especially without my gran.
4. The older you get, the less fucks you give
This has been life changing for me. The older you get, the more you realise that making everyone else happy is impossible. You need to put yourself first and stop trying to make everyone else happy with your life.
5. Money doesn’t matter
Sure, it’s nice to have money, but having lots of money doesn’t actually make you happier! If you don’t appreciate what you have now, you will never appreciate what you have no matter how much you acquire. You actually don’t need money to have a fulfilling life
6. Sex is as good as you make it
Lets face it, no one is having great sex at 25. Too many insecurities and hang ups. Once you get into your 30’s though…whoooooweeee! You start to learn what you like, what works for you and as I said in number 4, you give less fucks about what you may look/sound like in the sack
7. You won’t feel different
One day you will wake up and be 37, but still feel the same as you did when you were 15. This scares me daily haha. My dad says ‘I look in the mirror and there’s some old guy staring back at me! THAT’S NOT MY FACE!’
So there you have it. A few things I wish I knew when I was 25. I am enjoying my thirties more than any other decade, and I do think that life gets better the older you get.
